This variety, very much local to the Southern part of Trivandrum, received the name as a legacy after the name of the place, Kotturkonam, bordering Tamilnadu where it originated. Highly popular in Trivandrum district, it is grown in Kollam and Kanyakumari districts as well in large numbers. It is highly disease resistant. Consumed raw, the flesh has a unique flavor and scent and the thick skin shares the reddish orange colour of the flesh when ripe
