The tree is fast-growing. The asexually propagated plant will bear within 3-5 years and buttress growth is prominent in old trees. The tree has low growing branches and the leaves are glossy green, it turns to red at maturity thus makes Santol an excellent ornamental shade tree.
The fruit has a golden yellow color, which is fairly big (300 – 600g). The fruit is attracting a lot of fruit lovers by its unique taste, which is a combination of sweet with a pleasant sour. The inner fleshy aril is soft, translucent-white, and juicy. The tree is cultivated as intercrop and also suitable for monoculture as well. The fruit contains 3 to 5 seeds, the rind of the fruit is also edible by removing the outer skin and can be pickled.
